Heberto Andrade #86

Heberto Andrade is in his 15th season as the Pirates Bullpen Catcher. His daily responsibilities include catching pitchers' bullpen sessions prior to games and warming up pitchers during the games. He also observes what pitchers are doing mechanically and has regular communication with the Bullpen Coach and Pitching Coach. Herbie also throws to the hitters during batting practice on a daily basis. Andrade spent three years (1986-88) as a catcher in the Cubs farm system and also played professional baseball in Venezuela, Italy and Colombia before retiring as a player in 1996. He served the Oakland Athletics as an area scout in 1996 and in the same capacity with the Phillies from 1998 to 2002. In addition to his duties with the Pirates, Heberto has spent the last 22 years as a coach and catching instructor during the Venezuelan Winter League. He also participated in the Caribbean World Series four times as a player and once as a coach. Andrade was also an assistant catching instructor and Pitching Coach for the Victoria Captials in 2003; an independent league team located in Victoria, BC, Canada. Herbie was one of two catchers used in the 2006 All-Star Game Home Run Derby, which was held at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on July 10. Andrade and his wife Maria reside in Venezuela and have four daughters; Heberit (27), Maria Jesus (21), Maria Jose (20) and Mariangel (19), along with one grandson, Andres (5).
