"Everyone in the Pirates family is saddened by the news of Elmer's passing," Pirates president Frank Coonelly said in a statement. "He was a tremendous baseball man who was respected by all in the game for his more than 60 years of dedicated service to the sport. Elmer was an integral part of two great Reds teams with which the Pirates teams of the 1970s did battle, before joining the Pirates in 1984. He played a critical role in putting together the Pirates championship teams in the 1990s.
"His positive presence is going to be missed by all of us at the ballpark as he was a staple at our games, even throughout this season. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, especially his four daughters, Mary Beth, Elaine, Lisa and Stasi."
