Pirates claim catcher Ramon Cabrera


The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed catcher Ramon Cabrera off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Cabrera will be optioned to Double-A Altoona. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

Cabrera hit .277 (109-for-394) with 17 doubles, five home runs and 47 RBI in 107 games this season with Double-A Erie. 

Cabrera was originally signed by the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent on April 11, 2008, before being traded to Detroit on December 5, 2012, in exchange for pitcher Andy Oliver. He has been named a mid-season All-Star in four of the last time years in the South Atlantic League (2010), Florida State League (2011) and Eastern League (2012 and 2014).
