CINCINNATI -- Same place, different situation, different umpire: Same outcome.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was correct on another challenge of a play at first base in the fifth inning of Wednesday's game against the Reds.

With two outs, Jordy Mercer grounded to second baseman Brandon Phillips, whose throw to first baseman Joey Votto was ruled in time by first-base umpire Gerry Davis.

On Hurdle's challenge and a 42-second review of the play, Davis' call was overturned.

That enabled pitcher Francisco Liriano to come up. He bounced the next pitch into an inning-ending force.

In the eighth inning of Tuesday night's game, Hurdle correctly challenged the out call at first base by umpire Quinn Wolcott for what would have been a double play. Neil Walker followed with a two-run homer later in the inning that cut the Reds' lead to 7-5, which became the final score.

In the bottom of the eighth Wednesday, there was a crew-chief challenge on a fielder's choice play at the plate. The Reds' Zack Cozart hit a ground ball to Bucs shortstop Jordy Mercer, who made a perfect throw to the plate to throw out Roger Bernadina trying to score from third base. Reds manager Bryan Price argued that catcher Tony Sanchez was blocking the plate before the throw came in.

Under replay rules, a manager may request but can't challenge a home-plate collision play. Davis and Wolcott had the play reviewed. After one minute and 13 seconds, it was confirmed and Bernadina was out.
