Andrew McCutchen Named Pirates Nominee for the 2013 Roberto Clemente Award

|

Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of Major League Baseball, today announced that Andrew McCutchen was named the Pittsburgh Pirates 2013 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Tomorrow marks the 12th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente's legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.

McCutchen is one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet pays tribute to Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

McCutchen's involvement with the Pittsburgh Promise began in 2011 and he has hosted several groups from the organization at PNC Park and has invited them as his special guests to other events around the city. The Promise provides scholarships to graduating teens and also develops Pittsburgh urban neighborhoods so that these communities are more conducive to learning.

Along with Pirates Charities, McCutchen founded his signature program Cutch's Crew in 2010. The goal of Cutch's Crew is to mentor inner city youth baseball players and at-risk children throughout the Greater Pittsburgh Area. Cutch's Crew also raises money for various community programs throughout western Pennsylvania.

Andrew has a passion for helping youth in the community to ensure they have every possible tool to succeed. Thanks to him, seven high school students from Homewood recently fulfilled their dream of performing at an international YMCA convention in Prague in August 2013. Students in the musical group Profound Myndz raised money to perform their song "All In" at the YMCA Global teen Leadership Conference in Prague, Czech Republic in August 2013. Despite their best efforts, they came up $4,300 short. When McCutchen heard about the students' disappointment, he stepped in with Pirates Charities to make sure the students got the funding they needed to make the trip.
