PITTSBURGH -- Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has watched a power hitter grow up this season. But he will not get to showcase that power in New York next week, at least not next Monday.

Pedro Alvarez said it would be "pretty neat" to be selected for the 2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby, but he was not chosen by National League captain David Wright. Rockies outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and Wright will participate for the NL. Alvarez hit 22 home runs heading into Monday, the third most in the NL.

Hurdle said he was fine with Alvarez's potential participation but that there was a certain way to approach the Derby.

"I've seen some guys come out of that thing gassed," Hurdle said. "Whether it was a coincidence or not, the follow-up for a few weeks was a whole different thing than what you saw going in."

Andrew McCutchen participated last year, exiting in the first round after hitting four homers.
