With one out in a 1-1 tie, Michael McKenry hit a grounder wide of first base that was gloved by first baseman Brett Wallace. Pitcher Dallas Keuchel got a late break toward covering the base, and caught Wallace's toss off the bag.
First-base umpire Tim Timmons ruled McKenry safe, indicating that Keuchel was off the bag.
However, after a brief huddle with the rest of the umpiring crew, the call was reversed -- with Timmons pointing out that Keuchel had tagged McKenry before the runner had come down atop the base.
Hurdle sprinted out to get an explanation, which clearly was not to his liking. As he became more animated, he drew Timmons' thumb.
Replays appeared to support the crew's amended call. Keuchel's glove seemed to tag McKenry's gut while he was still in the air, taking his last stride.
The ejection was Hurdle's fifth of the season.
