PITTSBURGH -- Neil Walker was back in the lineup for Tuesday night's series opener against the Brewers, feeling rested after having sat out the long, wet, cool game in Chicago on Monday.
Walker missed 16 starts while recuperating from tightness in his lower back until returning for Saturday afternoon's game against the Cubs. He remained in the lineup on Sunday, but a total playing time of seven and a half hours over the two days "was a little taxing," he said.
"Those were long games, and he had no time to recover in between," said manager Clint Hurdle, who had Walker in his customary No. 5 spot in the order, between Garrett Jones and Pedro Alvarez.
Walker is 1-for-10 in his first three games back, including a pinch-hitting appearance on Friday.
