Bucs' front office gains a Champion

PITTSBURGH -- General manager Neal Huntington has added another member to his front-office staff, announcing on Tuesday that experienced scout Keith Champion will be joining the Pirates as a special assistant to Huntington.

Champion has spent the last two seasons as a professional scout for the Red Sox. His work with Boston came after 12 seasons with the Cubs, where he served both as a special assistant to the GM (2000-06) and as an advanced scout (1995-99).

Champion, 49, has eight years of experience as a Minor League manager and coach in the St. Louis and San Diego farm systems. He also spent three years as a player in the Cardinals' Minor League system.

With the addition of Champion, Huntington has now hired three new special assistants since the end of the season.
