Cedeno gets cortisone shot in left arm

PITTSBURGH -- Shortstop Ronny Cedeno received a cortisone shot in his left arm on Monday. He's hopeful that he'll be able to start swinging again on Tuesday.

Cedeno (left shoulder impingement) has now been out of the lineup for five straight days, though the Pirates are eyeing a mid-week return as long as he continues to improve. He was able to field ground balls during the team's batting practice prior to Monday's series opener against Florida.

"We'll see how he does the next day or two," manager John Russell said. "Hopefully we get him back in the next day or [so]. The shoulder is healing better."

A stint on the disabled list still appears unlikely for Cedeno. In Cedeno's absence, Argenis Diaz made his fifth consecutive start at short on Monday. Diaz has hit safely in three of his first four starts.
